Dr. Randall Nguyen is a native of Southern California. He graduated in only three years with Magna Cum Laude honors in biology from the University of California at Irvine. He was then awarded his medical degree from the highly prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. While attending Johns Hopkins, he researched at the internationally respected Wilmer Eye Institute. After obtaining his medical degree, Dr. Nguyen returned to his family and home in California. He completed his medical internship at the University of California, Los Angeles – St. Mary Medical Center. Dr. Nguyen was recognized as the Medical Intern of the Year for providing excellent comprehensive care for his patients, excelling as a clinician and being attentive to his colleagues and staff. Dr. Nguyen then completed his ophthalmology residency the University of Southern California Doheny Eye Center. Inspired by the sight saving role of retinal surgery and fascinated by the ever-evolving technological advances of the specialty, Dr. Nguyen sought and completed his medical and surgical retina fellowship at the University of British Columbia Vancouver Eye Center. He trained with five other retinal surgeons and benefited from one of the busiest and highest surgical volume programs in both Canada and the United States. Dr. Nguyen has been a physician with South Coast Retina Center since 2000. His clinical expertise includes complex retinal detachment repair, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, management of macular degeneration and other retinal disorders.Less

Dr. Michael Roh has been in practice with South Coast Retina Center since 2006. He graduated with Cum Laude honors from Duke University, where he majored in Biology and minored in East Asian Studies. He was awarded the prestigious Sirena WuDunn Memorial Scholarship for his academic excellence and for his contributions to the Asian Pacific Studies Institute at Duke University. Dr. Roh then earned his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine with Honors and was in the top 10th percentile of his graduating class in both grade point average and USMLE Board scores. Dr. Roh completed a preliminary internal medicine year at Evanston Northwestern Hospital and then pursued his ophthalmology residency at George Washington University. He served as Chief Resident during his ophthalmology residency. Dr. Roh published his work during residency in the Journal of Oculoplastics and Reconstructive Surgery and presented this material at an international conference in Gothenberg, Sweden in 2003. Dr. Roh received his fellowship training in Birmingham, Alabama, where he completed a clinical fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery with the Retina Specialists of Alabama and through the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Dr. Roh completed a research fellowship sponsored by the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education and the American Society of Ocular Trauma. In 2005, Dr. Roh lectured throughout China as a representative of the Helen Keller Foundation. Dr. Roh has volunteered his surgical expertise in Honduras and looks forward to plan and devote more of his time to these endeavors in the future. Dr. Roh served as Vice-Chairman and then Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center from 2010 through 2013. He is also an active member of the American Medical Association, the Los Angeles County Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Orange County Society of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Retina Specialists.Less

Dr. Boswell was locally born at Seaside Hospital, attended Poly High School and then the University of California at Irvine. He attended Loma Linda Medical School, followed by an Internship at L.A. County Hospital. He completed his ophthalmology residency at UC Irvine. Dr. Boswell left Southern California for a 2 year Fellowship in Disease and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at Wills Eye Hospital. He is one of the founding partners of the practice and has been with South Coast Retina Center since 1984. Dr. Boswell’s career in retinal diseases coincided with the development of vitreous surgery, the AIDS epidemic, and now the era of intraocular injection to treat infection, diabetic retinopathy, inflammatory diseases and macular degeneration. Dr. Gasperini is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous. She grew up in the rural Upper Peninsula of Michigan and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology, Summa Cum Laude, from Michigan State University Honors College. She attended Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, where she was awarded her medical degree and completed an internship in Internal Medicine. Thereafter, Dr. Gasperini went on to complete residency training in ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University, where she was elected co-chief resident. She completed a two year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute/ University of Southern California. After completing her fellowship training, Dr. Gasperini joined South Coast Retina Center and is the first and only female retina surgeon in the practice. She is the principal investigator for clinical trials in the research department. Dr. Gasperini appreciates her patients and their families’ concerns and dedicates her time to properly educate them about ocular conditions and treatment options. Such emphasis on patient care has reflected in a Health Care Partners Group Patient Satisfaction Award for outstanding performance and exceptional commitment in 2011. Currently, Dr. Gasperini presents on various subjects awarding continuous education to the doctors of optometry and ophthalmology in our community. Dr. Roberto Roizenblatt received his medical degree from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. He went on to complete an internship in Internal Medicine at Jacobi Medical Center in New York, followed by successfully completing two residencies in ophthalmology at the Federal University of Sao Paulo and later at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Roizenblatt trained in a competitive two-year Vitreoretinal Surgery fellowship in which he benefited from a high volume of complex cases. Following being awarded his PhD focusing on biometric iris recognition systems, he did his Post-Doctorate work for two years at the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California. It was during this time that he was a member of the team that developed the world’s premier retinal prosthesis, a currently FDA approved implantable device intended to restore visual function for the blind. Dr. Roizenblatt has authored and co-authored multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals. He enjoys performing complex vitreoretinal surgeries with areas of surgical interest which include retinal detachment repair, retinal complications of anterior segment surgery, macular surgery and diabetic retinopathy, among others. Dr. Roizenblatt is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, European Society of Retina Specialists, Vit-Buckle Society and American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is the first US ophthalmologist to have obtained the title of Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology. He is licensed by the Medical Board of California and Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.  Dr. Roizenblatt performs surgeries at hospitals and outpatient surgery centers in Orange County, Torrance and Long Beach.Less
